Point of Contact / Artist

Tom Tyler.

Tom Tyler began releasing records through J. Saul Kane’s DC Recordings in the late 1990s. Built from samples excavated from borrowed vinyl and found sound, his early EPs merged jazz, hip-hop, soundtracks and stray voices into a loose, often oddball downtempo sound.

His records found support from Gilles Peterson, DJ Food and many others, with tracks appearing on Peterson’s Worldwide show and throughout the Solid Steel playlists of the day. Kid Loco selected “Attitude Adjuster” for his DJ-Kicks compilation, while remix work included The Cinematic Orchestra’s “Channel 1 Suite” for Ninja Tune, Sofa Surfers’ “Sweat” for Klein Records and “Scary Movies” by Bad Meets Evil Feat. Eminem & Royce 5-9

The albums Asleep at the Switch in 2000 and Forward Going Backward in 2006 developed his solo work further. Alongside those releases, Tyler formed Stromba with James Dyer, releasing The Pinch EP in 1999 and the 2005 album Tales from the Sitting Room, both on FatCat Records. The album was recorded largely in his sitting room so the title was reasonably accurate.

Under his alias Vincent Markowski, Tyler also released The Madness of Moths and Dirty Capsules through DC Recordings. These releases took his music into completely different territory, uptempo electro beats that received DJ support from the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Simian Mobile Disco and Apparat (who included “The Madness of Moths” on his 2010 DJ-Kicks compilation)… Remix work under the alias included The Emperor Machine and The Black Ghosts.

Tyler then largely stepped away from releasing music, briefly resurfacing around 2014 with the library album Temas Spatiale, made with his friend Matt Johnson (Jamiroquai) for the Rotary Tower music library

Now in 2026 Tom has returned with a new batch of creations, a couple of self released downtempo EPs “The Past Passed” & “Look What You Could Have Won”, the jazzy house & disco stylings of “Truth Decays”, with new material in the pipeline
